Jeffrey Open Space Trail Connects Vast North Irvine Trail System

Soon, Irvine residents and visitors will be able to enjoy what promises to be one of the city’s most distinctive recreational amenities ever: the Jeffrey Open Space Trail.

Jeffrey Open Space Trail

The wide, beautiful, meandering trail was a major amenity envisioned as part of the City of Irvine’s Open Space Initiative, a landmark agreement approved by city voters in June 1988. A collaborative product between the City of Irvine and the Irvine Company, the initiative enabled the permanent preservation of large, interconnected natural lands throughout the city, in exchange for more concentrated development in other areas as part of Irvine’s balanced, master-planned growth.

If you’ve driven or walked along Jeffrey Road in the northern part of the city recently, you likely noticed the Jeffrey Open Space Trail’s steady, ongoing creation. As new villages are constructed in north Irvine, sections of the trail will be created and opened.

Currently, you can enjoy the mile-long trail between Trabuco Road and Irvine Boulevard. This stretch features expansive lawns ideal for picnics, kite-flying and other leisurely activities.

Work is well underway on two new sections scheduled to open in early 2015. When they are completed and opened, you’ll be able to journey more than three miles along this beautiful trail from Cypress Village Community Park near the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway to Portola Parkway.
